Answer first: A pine shedding yellow needles near the trunk in fall, with green tips, is healthy. A pine with browning at the branch tips, reddish boring dust in the bark, pitch tubes on the trunk, or white/tan shelf fungus at the base is in real trouble. Once the whole crown has turned, Texas A&M Forest Service puts the tree at 6 to 10 months from brittle, which is when it gets expensive to take down.
Every fall, pines across Gregg County drop a round of needles, and every fall a few homeowners call us convinced their tree is dying because of it. Most of the time it is not. Loblollies and other Southern pines carry two or three years of needles at once, and the oldest set, closest to the trunk, turns yellow and falls on a normal seasonal clock while the newer growth at the branch tips stays green. That is the tree doing routine maintenance, not decline.
The signs that actually matter point the other direction: color loss starting at the tips or on this year's new growth, not the old interior needles. That pattern usually means something has attacked the tree from the outside, most often bark beetles in this part of Texas, sometimes root disease working from underneath. Both are diagnosable from the ground, and both change how urgently the tree needs to come down.

What bark beetles are doing under there
Ips engraver beetles and southern pine beetle are the two species doing most of the damage to East Texas pines, and both go after trees that are already stressed, usually by drought, though southern pine beetle can take healthy trees too when populations spike. They bore through the bark to lay eggs, and the adults and larvae feeding under the bark cut off the tree's ability to move water and nutrients. That is why a beetle-hit pine can go from a few yellow needles to a fully red crown in as little as 3 weeks during a hot, dry stretch in Gregg County: the damage is already done underneath, the color change is just catching up. This matters most on the 60- to 100-foot loblollies common on Longview lots, since a tree that size going brittle overhead is a bigger structural problem than a small ornamental pine doing the same thing.
Texas A&M Forest Service tracks these outbreaks by drought conditions specifically because the two are linked. A dry summer stresses a stand of pines; the beetles find the weakest ones first; and if the population is large enough, they move to trees that would otherwise have been fine. That is the mechanism behind the clusters of dead pines you sometimes see standing together along a fence line or a dry ridge, rather than one tree at random.
What root rot looks like instead
Not every dying pine is a beetle problem. Root and butt rot, most often Annosum root disease in pine plantings, works from the roots up rather than the crown down. The tell is the fungus itself: tan-to-brownish shelf conks at the base of the trunk or on exposed roots, tough and rubbery rather than dry. Texas A&M Forest Service calls conks positive field identification, meaning if you see one, the rot is confirmed, not suspected. Trees with this kind of decay often show a sparse, off-color crown along with the fungus, and because the damage is in the root system, they are more prone to going over at the base in wind than a sound tree of the same size, even before the crown looks fully dead.
Why this matters more near a house than out in a field
A dying pine in an open pasture can stand until it falls over and nobody is affected. The same tree within striking distance of a roof, a driveway, or a power line is a different calculation, because dead and dying pines do not fail the way live ones do. A live tree mostly goes over at the roots in saturated ground, in weather you can see coming. A dead or beetle-hit pine drops pieces unpredictably: a 30-foot top, a big limb, in wind that would not bother a healthy tree, sometimes in no wind at all. Once you have confirmed real warning signs, not just seasonal shedding, the next question is how urgent the removal is. - Check whether the color loss is on old interior needles (normal) or new growth at the tips (not normal).
- Look at the bark for reddish boring dust or pitch tubes, and the base of the trunk for shelf-shaped conks.
- If you see real warning signs, note how close the tree is to the house, driveway, or lines.
- Call for an assessment rather than waiting through another season. Early is cheaper, both for us and for you.
We will not tell you a healthy tree needs to come down. Plenty of the calls we get turn out to be normal fall shedding or a leaning tree that has always leaned. When the signs above are real, though, waiting is the expensive choice: a pine that could be climbed and dropped in sections today needs a bucket truck or crane in a few months, and the price follows the equipment.
